Psalm 19

From the Evening Prayer of the Common of Holy Women:

Antiphon: Her mouth uttered words of wisdom; her tongue spoke words of compassion.

Psalm 19

The heavens proclaim the glory of God
and the firmament shows forth the work of his hands.
Day unto day takes up the story
and night unto night makes known the message.

No speech, no word, no voice is heard
yet their span extends through all the earth,
their words to the utmost bounds of the world.

There he has placed a tent for the sun;
it comes forth like a bridegroom coming from his tent,
rejoices like a champion to run it's course.
There is nothing concealed from it's burning heat.

I've been reading St John of the Cross' 'Spiritual Canticle of the Soul and the Bridegroom of Christ', and came across this Psalm today, in the Common of Holy Women from the RC Book of Hours. Seems to describe much of the same territory really.

God bless St John and St Teresa, holy exemplars of writing that expressed the miniscule detail that we can find engraved within the very hearts of our souls. Would that our lives were more easily served by living to the same level of exploration, excavation and adoration today.
